S/S 10 | King Of Pop

About This Project

On June 25th, 2009, an icon passed away and left us with a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations for a long time. It was the end of an era. It was the day I realized how much this personality had inspired me during my childhood and brought back a barrage of memories that I had forgotten over time. My first cassette, my first room poster, first dance routine in front of the mirror, and first style statement can all be attributed to him. In the past decade, his fame and glory had turned into controversy and scandal. It was sad to see someone who was the darling of the industry turn into its biggest joke but his untimely death drew everyone’s attention to the legacy he was leaving behind. Suddenly, his numerous achievements overshadowed all his controversial eccentricities and the whole world joined together to celebrate the life and mourn the loss of the legend that was Michael Jackson.

This collection is a tribute to Michael and the celebration of his life as the King of Pop. I felt the need to pay homage to a true visionary for all the joy he gave us in his lifetime. His appeal transcended international boundaries and integrated the most diverse cultural and socio-economic audiences making him a global icon for our generation.

Music is an integral part of all my collections and the first piece of music I remember listening to is the single Billie Jean and watching in awe as Michael did the moonwalk for the first time in his sequin jacket. This collection starts from his second solo album, Thriller; the highest selling album of all time. From the 80s glam inspired outfits, the collection takes a more punk feel for his next album, Bad. The last part of the collection is from the early 90s and the Dangerous album when Michael started dressing like a king in his royal monarch inspired outfits and continued to do so for the rest of his life. Each outfit in the collection is inspired directly from a signature look from his various music videos.
