F/W 10 | Concrete Jungle

About This Project

“New York; concrete jungle where dreams are made, there’s nothing you can’t do” The Empire State of Mind – Alicia Keys

This collection is a tribute to the building of “The American Dream”. Manhattan being the melting pot of all contemporary pop cultures, serves as a playground for the extremely ambitious and an example of a capitalist society obsessed with all the superficial aspects of life. A wall of $100 bills and various calculation symbols are a testament to the Wall Street mentality of “Greed Is Good” as voiced by Oliver Stone’s iconic character, Gordon Gecko. The ideology behind the collection was conceived from Ann Rynd’s iconic novel, The Fountainhead; set in the golden age of skyscraper architecture of the 1930s. Howard Roark’s journey of being rejected from society and his peers for never compromising his vision and staying true to his talent is a reflection on the pivotal balance and eternal battle between creativity and the commercial potential of any art form. The early 1930s marked the glory days of Art Deco architecture with the completion of some of the most iconic skyscrapers in the world today such as The Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building and the Rockefeller Center. Ironically, they also marked the beginning of the Great Depression after the infamous Wall Street crash of 1929.

Fast forward 80 years later to 2010, and history repeats itself in a new shape and form with the bursting of the real estate bubble. There is nothing ironic about the global recession today. It is just a part of a lifecycle that needs to be thoroughly questioned before broken. Old school ideals of extreme capitalism are conceding to contemporary ambitions powered with social responsibility. The “American Dream” is in the process of being redefined by “ART-itects” who are responsible for constructing it into a Global phenomenon.

     The new dream starts today!
